Happy 18th annual St Patricks Day!

The wearing off the green commenced on Saturday March16th at 3:00 local time. The weather cooperated yet again and even though it was only about 40 degrees with the winter we have it was a balmy day!

The regular fare was once again observed, smoked pork sandwiches, homemade BBQ sauce, blue cheese coleslaw and a pot o' noodles for the veg folks. One of the guests was heard saying ' Oh I would never miss this they have the really good pork sandwiches" the tradition lives on!

We did miss Grandma and Grandpa Murphy as they were a tad bit under the weather and did not make the parade. However the newest member of the Murphy Clan, Maui made his debut and my friend Joe and Carmen's daughter Kia was his ambassador for the day the two of them had a blast.

The crowd was the usual size with many repeat and new "Irish for a day "participants. The parade, I think for the first time in at least 5 years was a complete group effort leaving no-one behind everyone fortified their beverage and made the trek along the parade route, again it was a blast!
It's always great to see young and old alike mixing it up Irish style wearing green and many other outlandish pieces of apparel. Their was a great group from both Tracy's and Tom's work along with a surprise appearance from Tom's oldest cousin and his son, his wife and their three kids, Tom's cousin Tim's grand kids! The party winds down around 8:00 and we all but finished the Keg the lone soldier played TAPS into Sunday and the call to arms was not heeded...
Sunday dinner - corn beef, roast cabbage, green beans, aunt minis and pumpernickel bread - best ever!

Aloha Maui!

Yes, after months and months and months of holding out and saying "no" to Kay's request for a new puppy, we gave in.

Per our Christmas blog, we have been on every rescue adoption site in MN applying for every chihuahua mix puppies that showed up. After several failed attempts and close calls, we are now the proud parents of Maui (aka, Vincent aka Malibu)

He is a Chiweenie (chihuahua daschund mix) and is SUCH a sweetie. He was born in early November and is probably about 3-4 lbs. He's brave, curious, friendly and super super duper wiggly.  He's also damn fast, not potty trained and a barker.

The 1st day, Nikki had nothing to do with him and ignored him completely. Sort of "if I ignore him maybe he'll go away".  But since, they have warmed up to each other and play constantly. Nikki is very gentle with him but definitely lets him know that she's the boss. He is starting to pick up both her good habits (sitting before he eats) and bad habits (wanting to eat at exactly 6:30 each day).

Against our better judgment he's been sleeping with Kay (spoiled rotten) but does spend his days in his kennel (barking like mad when we leave).

Overall he's a super fun and cute puppy who (we hope) we turn into a good dog, thanks to Nikki's mentorship.

Now we just need the snow to gosh that he can start to learn to go potty outside. Since he came up from Texas, he's not a big fan of the snow but is doing well with training on a puppy pad.

Welcome to the family Maui!!

Billy and Tracy's Excellent Adventures

Billy moved up a level this year in taekwondo, from Cadet (ages 12-14) to Junior (15-17).  In taekwondo, you compete in the age group that you will be by 12/31 of that year. Since Billy is a mid December birthday, even though he's 14, he has to compete in the 15-17.  They still do sort by weight, so he is in the lowest weight class < 99 lbs. However, other kids cut weight so..its entirely possible he could spar a 17 year old 110 lb kid that dropped 11 lbs to compete at a lower level. That's a bit scary.

Also, whatever weight you spar at state is the weight that you HAVE to spar at nationals in July. So...what are the odds that a 14 yr old boy will have a growth spurt between Feb and July? Pretty high.

In an effort to manage this, we signed Billy up to spar in the 99-110 lb weight class at Iowa State and the < 99 lb weight class at MN State and the US Open \.

Friday 2/22 and Billy, Ace and Tracy packed the car and headed to Iowa to kick some butt. The plan was to return late Saturday night so that Tracy could go to her annual work event, that she hosts, followed by Jimmy's baptism (see prior blog).  It was not to be.

After weigh in on Friday night (Tracy made Billy weigh in with a 1 lb weight in his pocket to get over 99 lbs., they were off in search of food and the hotel.

Saturday, the weather started to look bad in Des Moisnes - upper 30;s and rain.  And, there was no one for Billy to spar with in his weight class because they had all dropped weight to make the < 99lb. Still, we werent worried. He now was qualified to compete at nationals at the higher weight class (in case of said growth spurt) and was able to compete in forms.  The coaches were letting everyone go after their events so we hopped in the car at 3:30, convinced we were ahead of the worst part of the storm.

They drove in pouring rain for 2 hours until they hight Clear Lake and the MN border, around 5:30.  Then it turned to slush.  They filled the tank and carried on.  Not a good idea.

About 30 min later, the snow was coming down so hard that the windshield wipers couldn't keep up.
Then, it got dark. Then, the snow and ice on the highways formed a seriously hazardous situation.  Unfortunately, here is not much between the Iowa border and Owatana.  As they came into Albert Lea, it let us a bit and so she decided to press on.  Another not good idea.

Immediately, it was impossible to see or drive.  She was going 7 miles per hour, on the highway, with her flasher on and her headlights off, following a semi by 50ft hoping that he stayed on the road.  They drove like this for 2 hours, going 14 miles, until they got to the Owatana exit. They managed to find a hotel and figured they'd camp out for the night. Now it was 8pm.  She went in to get a room and immediately started shaking all over. Its funny how you can not be scared at all when you are in a situation like that and then you stop and it all hits at once. Thank god for the Holiday Inn Owatana. They had a restaurant, bar and water park.

After 2 glasses of wine, the boys suited up and played at the water park until 10pm, then it was lights out for all and a plan to get up early and be home before noon.  Again, all the best laid plans,....

The next morning, they learned that Hwy 35 had closed down at 8pm the night before and wasnt slated to reopen in the foreseeable future.  No one could get out of the hotel parking lot and there was a ground blizzard (all that snow from the night before was blowing at gusts of up to 50 mph and visibility was 0).  There was NO way she was going back out in that so, after much deliberation, at 2pm, she extended her stay another night.

The hotel did an amazing job. All the staff were stuck there as well and were so kind and calm. They made sure everyone had a room, food and updates on the highway and weather.

There was a hockey and basketball tournament that was canceled so the hotel was full of kids and families.  The hockey parents started drinking at noon on Sunday...

It should also be mentioned that the hotel was doing its best under the circumstances.  The pipes it the restaurant had frozen in January with the polar vortex and the only food they could serve was deep fried food on paper plates.  And, the hockey parents were eating and drinking them out of all their stock.

The boys swam all afternoon, Tracy got in a 2 hour work out, they all did homework and watched silly TV.

Monday came and the highway was open 4 miles north of them, all she had to do was make it 4 miles and she'd have a fairly straight shot home.  She roused the boys at 6am and headed out.  They made it!! In fact, she dropped them directly at school at 7:45,  much to their disappointment.

Then, it was a quick change, uniforms washed, repacked and ... headed to Vegas on Tuesday afternoon for the US Open.

Their flight was slightly delayed but they managed to get in to Vegas, have a nice dinner and crash for the night, again with silly hotel TV (the mysteries of King Tut)

Wednesday was weigh in and he made it easily. They couldn't venture too far because they werent sure what time practice would be called. It was Mexican for lunch and then a long walk down the BLVD.  In typical TKD fashion, it was called at 2:30, right in the middle of the afternoon.

The kids worked out for and hour and then had a super fun game of TKD paddle tennis. These kids are so competitive that even THAT game got intense. In fact, Grand Master Lee was leading the way. They had a blast.

Then, it was another really good dinner, Pokeman Go with Ross and more silly TV (botched) with an early night.

Thursday was his competition and he was match 16.  As we've posted before, its impossible to know when the kids are going to compete so its a bunch of hanging around the tournament.  Tracy figured that she had about 2 hours before he went so she worked out, packed up and checked out.

Sure enough, he was up at about Noon.  Unfortunately, he this was his 1st ever match as a Junior and the nerves got to him. The 1st round was tough and the other kid was up by 30.  Billy bounced back and held the kid to only 3 more points in round 2. However, he was up by so much that they called the match before the 3rd round.  That's ok. He learned a lot and spent the rest of the day studying all the other competitors.

They had a red eye home that night so the plan was ... stay at the meet until released (around 8pm), shower in a friends room (thank you Webb's!) and then dinner and homework at the airport.

The plan worked brilliantly and they even managed to sleep the full 3 hours home.  Then it was a nap from 6-8:30am and Tracy took him to school and went to work.

Yikes. They are both glad to be home and in their own beds.  Its a totally normal week with MN state next weekend.

Jimmy jumps in the river

Imagine chasing three very active teenagers around the city using google calendar, excel spreadsheets and various other management tools to try and run your household as George Banks would say with  " British Precision" ...that would be us.

Now imagine that things are going along somewhat in the way Mr. Banks would appreciate only to have your eldest come to you on a random Thursday evening and say"oh by the way I'm getting Baptized on Sunday at 5:00" The same weekend that Billy has taekwondo state in Iowa, Kay has gymnastics state at the U and the Sadies dance AND ... Tracy's annual work event is Sunday and she's hosting. How would you react?

Background... Jimmy has become very active in his new church, River Valley Church. He goes every Wednesday night to the youth group/service. Recently, they have asked him to play drums and run the music for the youth service and have asked him to play in some of the upcoming Sunday services. He is thrilled with his church and completely involved so it is not a shock that he wants to be "Baptized". But really do you need to be Baptized 2 different times? And on the busiest weekend of the year?!  I guess so. Not to make light, he made this choice as his own and feels very compelled, so we said yes.

What we did not expect was that Tracy and Billy would travel to Iowa for an overnight so Billy could compete in the Iowa State Taekwando tournament, and not come back for 4 days (due to a crazy winter storm that shut down Hwy 35 - more on this in the next blog). So since Tracy was going to miss the Baptism we called in the big guns, Jimmy's Godfather, Jim Fellows. Jim and Jen joined Tom at the service and then back to the house for an almost compete turkey dinner.

Jimmy was truly blessed by the event and it was exciting to be there amongst all the energy that his church brings.

Jimmy, we love that you are making your own way and choices in your life.  So proud that you take life by the horns and find/stay on your path.

LOVE!

Jimmy's Baptism

Sadies, Gymnastics and Kay

This gymnastics season was again an awesome year for Kay. She continues to excel in the sport she loves and is now loving High School gymnastics.

Kay had another great year in gymnastics despite not letting us attend her meets. She gets very anxious and nervous if we show up and does better when we are not there. Fortunately for Kay we are understanding parents and fortunately for us the members of the gymnastics team know this and take video and pictures and update us as the meets are going on.

This year Kay had another teammate that is very good and between the two of them Hopkins won all but 2 of their meets. The beat archival Eden Prairie  as well as Minnetonka and the team was a fulfilled high energy group on teenage girls, what could possibly go wrong!

It was also helpful because the other gymnast pushed Kay to up her game and she did. She excelled this year on vault, which for Kay has always been lowest score and nemesis. She mastered  a back double back flip which was awesome. She continues to improve on the vault which was not happening at the club level and Kay landed her personal best a 9.20.

Her bars were solid she did have a bit of a hard time with the transition from the lower to upper beam. This is technical gymnastics talk which, being a follower for several years have a firm understanding of what it means, acknowledging the novice follower may not. So... to be helpful it means moving from one bar to the other! She landed a personal best this year of a 8.775.

The beam, in gymnastics terms, is where gymnastics go to die, was the strong point of Kay's year. She was consistently in the top 3 at every meet  as able to stick  a back tuck and double back flip off the beam and stick her landing; going into sectionals her personal best was 9.125

Her floor routine is Kay's sassy, in your face, fun time energy release and to watch her is a real treat. She takes over the floor with her skills and her attitude. Interjecting another gymnastics observation is that Kay is having so much fun she gets out one bounds 2 or 3 times which costs her up to 3/4 of a point but you can't tell her that! She again going into sectionals had a personal best of 9.1 giving her a total best overall score of 35.645.

Sectionals is the meet that can springboard a gymnast or an entire team to the State tournament. This year, and for the first time in Hopkins history, the team had a shot of making it as a team to state. How it works is the top team in the region (of 8) will go to state, in addition the top 3 gymnasts in each event will go to state. In the event that one of the top 3 is also on the team going to state the second place gymnasts will move to the first place.

So Kay had an awesome sectional meet, the problem is so did several other girls. Kay landed a personal best on the beam and 9.20 and the floor of a 9.25 giving her another personal overall score of 35.39 however her vault and bars were not her best. Kay made it to state on the beam placing 3rd in the section. She placed 5th overall and only missing out of the overall completion by less that 1 point. Her teammate came in 2nd overall and made it to state as an all a round, which Kay was last year, the team came in 3rd which was  fantastic.

State is nothing less than a pressure cooker of stress, disappointment and high levels of competition on each event. Kay was only competing on the beam however the pressure is just the same. She was a bit cranky and we were worried about her focus leading up to the meet. She persevered and again landed a 9.2 which at state is an accomplishment.  She ended up as 15th out of 57 on the beam. The first place girl had a 9.5 so Kay was right there! She is right in the hunt and now wants to go to the best high school training facility and get back after it! Kay we are proud of you !

Sadies is the dance in which the girls ask the guys or in this 'day in age' when a bunch of girls go online shopping for dresses, shoes and accessories  driving their parents crazy with Amazon shipping, returns and a never ending stream of I changed my mind...teenage girls AUGH.

To complicate matter the dance was on the same day as the gymnastics state tournament and we were worried Kay was going to burn out. She did rally and her and her friends had a super fun time getting ready for the dance, make up , hair and whatever else teenage girls do. The dance was at the high school and they had a blast and ended up with a sleep over at Kay's friends house.

Kay made it home around 11:30 the following day and wanted to go visit another friend in the afternoon. The state tournament, the dance and overnight finally caught up with our little pukaruk  and she fell asleep right after we got her home and sleep the day away.

More to come...

Kay we are so proud of you for working through the anxiety of competition and doing an amazing job.  You are a wonder to watch and we love how fierce and strong you are.

Polar Vortex - Yikes

January totally got away from us. Between end of semester finals, gymnastics meets, work travel for Tracy, a Taekwondo banquet for Billy and 3 days off of school due to -25 degree weather, we couldn't see straight.  So, let;s get you all caught up...

Jimmy - continues to love his youth group and church. He's starting to play drums in the music ministry and is learning to run the sound. He's been practicing like crazy and its fun to see him so invested. He and Melanie "took a break" for week because they didnt feel like they were "walking the same path to Jesus".  They gave each other space, reflected and came back together.  It was his 1st brush with heart break and its hard to see your 6'2"  210 lb 17 yr old crying at the kitchen table. But, they handled it in a very mature way and are now back to dating.  I worry when he really does get his heart broken.  He also had a band concert as well as jazz concert. its so fun to see them play, they are SO good!

Kay had a tough few weeks - 7 gymnastics meets in 14 days on top of 2 finals (Biology and Geometry).  While she failed both tests (yes, got ~ 55 pts on each out of 100), she managed to get most of her homework in and passed the classes (with a C- and a D+).  I'm just glad she passed.  During all this, she had a mildly sprained ankle and wasnt able to compete in the big meet against Wayzata - sigh.  However, she's made it through, we started a new semester and are hoping for a fresh start.  Each meet she does get better on vault, floor and beam and its fun to watch. She is back to doing  back tuck on the beam and a tuck on her vault. Its exciting and scary to watch.

Billy had his annual Taekwondo banquet and while he SWORE he isnt a dancer and wasnt going to dance. .. low and behold, who's on the dance floor with Rick Astley? ! It was super fun to see all the kids having fun together and every single one of them dancing up a storm.  Tom drove Billy and Ace to Winnipeg for a camp and they all stayed in a big house together - 15 kids, 5 adults and Tom cooked for all of them. It was a great bonding trip and they managed to drive home about an hour ahead of a major snow storm and the polar vortex....

Tom is a saint.  Not only did he race a blizzard home for 7 hours in the car on 94, but he also dealt with 3 stir crazy kids when they were off school for 3 days due to dangerously low temperatures (-15 to -35 for 3 days straight, thats not even wind chill!).  He got lots of putsy stuff done around the hours  and even did the boiling water challenge (see below)

Tracy had a week long conference in Florida during the polar vortex and that brought a weird combination of mental exhaustions (conference), guilt (polar vortex) and relaxing (ocean walk every day).  She came back in full swing with a Super Bowl inclusive event with the Vikings and the Taekwondo banquet where she danced with all the mom's to hip hop.

Whew.  Now, onto February which will hold.... Gymnastics Sectionals and State (if Kay makes it), Sadie Hawkins Dance (juries out if Kay's taking a boy or not but she has a dress!), Iowa and Minnesota State as well as the US Open in Taekwondo and...Tracy's annual work celebration, the Togetherness Celebration.  Jimmy has a big Jazz fest and band concerts as wells.

No moss grows under our feet!  Send us energy and peace in the process.

Love to you all!

South Carolina Fun!!

Since our kids are die hard 'stay at home for Christmas' people, we usually head out of town on 12/26 to see Tracy's side of the family.  (and yes, we did watch Die Hard in prep for the holidays this year)

This year we decided to go visit Grandma and Grandpa in South Carolina.  They are putting their condo on the market in 2019 and we hadn't been to visit in 8 years (we usually see them in Michigan vs South Carolina).  I found 2 VRBO condo's and Tammy's family drove down to meet us.  It was fun!!

We flew through Atlanta, landed late, spent the night and got up the next day to get the car and make the drive. Its a super easy drive (2 1/2 hours) and its fun to start heading into the mountains.  We arrive about an hour after Tammy's family and it was cousin time!!  The girls stayed with Tammy and Jeff, Jimmy got his own room at Grandma/pas  and we had Joey (Herbie bailed on us and stayed with Tammy).

After all the hugs and welcome, we walked the nature trail down by the lake. Everyone paired up and chatted the whole time, catching up and just being happy to be together. Grandma had chalupas' ready and we set the TV to the NFL station, the dial would not change in 6 days...

The next day we explored the fitness center. All the kids got a great workout and spent hours swimming and in the hot tub.  We had our Christmas dinner (ham and aunt minnies) and watched more football.

Saturday, the rain finally stopped and we headed out for a real hike. Grandpa found one that led to a waterfall and would take us about 2 hours round trip.  It was gorgeous but a little treterous.  We were hiking along a river. Given all the rain, it was swollen and muddy. We had to cross the river on rocks 5 times and no one managed to stay dry. Billy even fell in.  But... Grandma was a trooper and we have new rule. No one is allowed to complain until Grandma complains. And, since Grandma never complains, we are enjoying that rule. Unfortunately we didnt make that rule until the end of the hike. So, the kids were loudly "complaining" (but having the time of their life) the whole way.  Our reward for making it was ice cream and more football!

Sunday was the highlight day, Grandpa got tickets to the Clemson basketball game.  Since he's an usher there, he was able to bring us down to court level. Best tickets we've ever had. The only bummer was ... the NFL flexed the Vikings game and Tom/Jimmy had to leave at 1/2 time of the Clemson game to go watch the Vikings game. Alls well that ends well though since...they secured a big table at the Wild Mushroom Pizza Joint and we were able to meet them after the game not wait for a table!

Monday was Georgia's 16th birthday so it was her day.  The kids went bowling and got fried chicken. Tom made ribs. Jeff made twice baked potatoes and Grandma made a salad.  It was ice cream sundaes for dessert and Monty Python the Holy Grail - a cousin favorite!

New Years Day was more fitness center swimming and the Escape Room. I was able to watch in the control room and it was pretty fun to see them solve the puzzles, work together and yell at each other.  None of them can claim to NOT be competitive.  We did left overs for dinner and watched more football.   Tammy and I also went through boxes and boxes of old photos and clothes/memoribilia with my Mom. In her effort to clean out, she wanted us to see some things and help her make some decisions. It was fun to see old photos and show them to the kids. The best was when Grandpa showed the kids his basketball scrapbook from when his team won state. The kids were so engrossed in his stories and pictures.

Unfortunately, all good things come to an end and we had to head home. Tammy and Jeff got up early and made the drive home in a record 12 & 1/2 hours.  We had all day to laze around, met a friend for take out Indian at her house in Duluth GA and then caught our LATE flight (10:45pm).  We got home at 1:30am and quickly tried to unpack in order to go to bed. The kids were thrilled to be home and Kay even asked me to make her a quick bowl of fettucini alfreado.  Tom offered and she said "no, mom makes it better - thanks mom!". Ahhh... I just wish it wasnt at 2am.

The good part of coming home before the end of break is that you get a bit of staycation time before school starts. So, the last 4 days of break have been spent getting caught up on chores, with friends and ready for school to start on Monday.

Loved our holiday break and are ready (and refreshed) to tackle 2019!  (or at least make it through until Spring Break;))  A HUGE thanks to Grandma/pa for sharing their world with us in SC. It is a special place.

So excited to see each other!
