A non bloggable blog

When social media and blogs were just starting to be a "thing" we would joke, is this blogable?  For the most part, good news was, bad news wasn't. Unfortunately, this is now the way of our world but, its not the truth. Life is tough, comes in waves and often downright sucks.

This is our unblogable update on our life, mainly our life with Kay.

As you can see from some previous posts, things have been tough for Kay the last few years...diagnosis of anxiety, ADHD, lack of interest in school, multiple attempts at passing her drivers test (despite being a good driver!), dropping self esteems and outbursts that are hard to predict.

She is also... creative, capable, funny, fierce, compassionate, kind and determined.  Not to mention, loved beyond measure.

We have sought help, both for ourselves in order to be better parents for her, but also for her to help her find her way.  We've had hit or miss success.

Good news, she's incredibly talented, kind to her friends, generous to a fault, wonderful with the kids she works with and a harder worker at the golf course.  Plus, she's smart and has a unique and funny outlook on the world.

The Bad news, its not clear if she'll actually graduate high school this year, she got a 106 mile an hour speeding ticket and we are worried she'll lose her license, she stays out super late every night and she smokes/vapes (a lot).

*The pressure of all of this also led her to decide to quit gymnastics. Unfortunately she felt it was her only option as her coaches weren't supporting her mental health when she said she wanted to slow down. She was captain and on the day she quit was named All Conference.

The last 2 weeks have been brutal, for her and for us.  Her vaping lead to a condition known as Cannabinoid Hyeremesis Syndrome. https://www.cedars-sinai.org/health-library/diseases-and-conditions/c/cannabinoid-hyperemesis-syndrome.html. We aren't sure why it impacted her so hard, maybe genetics, maybe because she's a smaller person? Who knows, but it hit hard.

2 days in the emergency room. 2 days at Methodist hospital. 3 days at U of M Childrens Hospital and, once she was home, a few other bouts, one that led to another ER visit at the U.

She was in serious pain, projectile vomiting and extreme nausea. She didn't eat for 6 days, barely slept, didnt shower and, I suspect doesn't remember much of it.

As someone who loves her beyond measure, it was absolutely heartbreaking to watch and not be able to really do anything to help.  And, i suspect we aren't all the way past or though this.

Due to her very real physical pain, her mental health also spiraled with her anxiety escalating, resulting in some panic attacks and inability to calm down. She ripped her IV out and had to be put on a 72 hour hold, locked herself in a bathroom and had a 6 hour rage the on the day she was released.

And, we have been in the process of trying to get her evaluated as we suspect that some of her executive functioning differences are due to her birth mother drinking through her pregnancy (Fetal Alcohol Effect). Part of this is that she has a limited ability to experience delayed gratification (everything needs to be immediate) along with a hard time processing "if I do this...then this happens" and actually execute on it.  We think its part of why she's extremely reluctant (refuses to) go to therapy. She doesn't see value in talking through her problems ("I went to therapy 4 times and it didnt help)

So, mix real physical pain with high levels of anxiety and ADHD with executive functioning this not typical and its a living nightmare. For her, for us, for everyone trying to help her.

What to do. Take deep breaths, reach out for help. Try to take it one day at a time. Hope that we make forward progress, even if its baby steps and 2 steps forward and 1 step back. Try to get sleep. Find ways to laugh (addicted to iCarly right now). Find the big picture (pre frontal cortex and executive functioning doesnt fully mature until 25-27 years old).  Absolutey enjoy and her celebrate her when she's in her zone and doing what she loves (baking amazing cakes, being with the little kids at work, etc)

Because, in the end, she's worth it. She's an amazing light in this world with incredible talents and potential. We are cheering her on and believe that she will find her path.  She is love. She is loved.

VMI - SOCON Champs!!

Jimmy said he wanted to play football at the highest level he could and man...did he get his wish!
VMI went 6-1 this year, won the SoCon for the 1st time since 1977 and held onto the Silver Shako in their final ultimate rivalry against the Citadel.  And...Tracy, Billy Grandpa Jim and Grandma Bunny were there as witnesses!  (Tom had to stay home with Kay because she was sick - more on that in another blog).

We all met up in Lexington on Friday night, Jimmy was "off limits" until post game so Saturday morning we did the usual walk, breakfast, catch up then it was off to find our virtual friend at the tailgate. These are all Jimmy's friends parents and we had little to no idea what they looked like, what to bring or what to expect. The good news is...Tracy has blue hair so...Jimmy just told his friends that and they all found us!  There was constant...wait, are you Jimmy's mom? We LOVE Jimmy.  He has quite a fan club and most of the families are lined up to adopt him.  Its very sweet.

The game was a nail biter and it shouldn't have been. A badly placed call, fumble and missed kick and we were all nervous. But, they pulled it out in the long run. Grandpa Jim did get some extra steps in from pacing.

We were able to go down on the field to celebrate and it was so exciting! They play in their 1st play off game, ever, next weekend again James Madison University and finished their season ranked 11th. THATS HUGE!!

His friends Chance, Aiden, Grant and Josh lit up the field and it was so fun to see this underdog team do so well.

The boys came up to the tailgate post game and there was more hanging out followed by dinner "as far away from post as you are willing to go".  We chose Quaker Steak and Lube for their wings and were NOT disappointed. And..of course Jimmy's bestie - Chance - and his family also showed up there 30 min after us.  Coincidence?  I think not.

Sunday was SUPER chill. Jimmy was able to spend the night with us, everyone slept in, Mom/Billy/Tracy went for a long walk while Jimmy/team were on ESPN learning their playoff standings.  Then Jimmy gave a super patient tour of post and we ran into more friends.  This was all followed by naps, all around and reading on the front porch. We did take out for dinner and Jimmy had to be back on post for an 8pm interview for a summer job (which he got!!)

Monday was a pre travel walk, packing and lovely good bye.

It was so awesome to see Jimmy in his element and share it with Billy & Grandma and Grandpa.  The weekend was JUST what the doctor ordered and it felt great to be treated to dinner each night, thanks to Grandma and Grandpa.

Cant wait until he's home in a few weeks before his big summer internship in DC.

but, more importantly - Rah Va Mil!!!! Let's win this thing!!

XOXOXO
Tracy

Kay got a burst of energy and made this extremely gorgeous cake, everything was from scratch. We are sort of afraid to eat it...

We all had sunburn necks. It was great to be together

Spring break - COVID style

As always, its been an interesting few weeks. Kay has been planning a driving road trip to California with 4 of her friends, in the Jeep. Needless to say, all of the parents were VERY nervous about this and of course, the kids did not want any of us involved in planning, etc. We did convince them to allow 1 planning meeting with all kids and parents. I have to admit, that did help me feel a bit better that we weren't the only "mean" parents with reservations, worry and a ton of questions.  But, the kids did have a pretty good plan despite much of it including driving through the night. Then again, they are vampires so maybe that's better. We were able to track Kay's location on Find my Friends and then Tom got notifications anytime she used her debit card so...we had a fairly good idea of where she was and what she was doing. Lots of pool time at the VRBO, rented a surf board, and Target/fast food runs. They are currently on the final stretch home from Cody Wyoming - about 12 hour drive - so they'll be home after midnight. Of course.

As part of my obsessive worry, I had what you could either call a brilliant idea or an extremely codependent idea.  Why don't Tom, Billy and I go on vacation while she's on vacation?  Billy loves to hike, take photos and rock scramble in the mountains. Vegas seemed like the perfect spot.  We could relax and spend some time with Billy while being only 4 hours away from her if things went south.  Plus, I was going to worry whether I was on vacation or at home.  It was a GREAT decision. We used all our airline points, stayed in a condo (no casino in this building) and Tom made us dinner every night.  Just what we needed.

Maui also had a great vacation, Kendra spoilt him rotten - new bed, new toys, new cat friends, new dog friends - but he was really excited to see us. She also said that he never used the puppy pads at her house, just at our house. At her house, he peed outside - ugh ;(

Jimmy got some great news as well - He had an interview with Rep Hagedorn as a summer intern in DC and GOT IT!  So, he's working in DC this summer and is beyond the moon. Currently peppering us with links to sublets in DC.  While I wish it was an internship on the other side of the aisle, but any congressional internship is pretty damn cool and exactly what he wants to do.

Now, this week, Billy has an annual physical, a date with Tyra and Kay has a meeting with the EP police department to ask about the speeding ticket she got before vacation (40 mph over) - we aren't 100% of the fine/consequences so figured a meeting would be a good next step. I have to admit, my stomach flips every time I think about this. Plus, its back to work for Tom and I.  Fingers crossed on her meeting that its just a fine and not a temporary loss of license or anything like that. (To her credit, she handled herself well with the police office and asked all the right questions. She didn't fall apart until she got home and then wrote us really nice note about how sorry she was, that it was a bad decision and she'll take the consequences. Let's just hope the consequences aren't also something Tom/I have to suffer through...

Never a dull moment around here.

1st day hike, Red Rock.

Billy had a bloody nose one night (desert air) and it looked like he killed a small animal in the bathroom the next morning.
